INCAPACITY OF MERE RELIGION

"What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. Matthew 23:23 NLT.

Despite the routinized obligations religion lay on people, it has not for once gotten the hearts of men converted. Mere religion gets men to be meticulous about things that are of little or no eternal consequence but leaves them in bondage to self.

Justice, mercy and faith are of higher value in God's sight but mere religion has no capacity to enable its victims exhibit them.

How can we explain a sick man's situation, who was lying down sick among religious faithfuls from year one to 38th year (John 5) and no one was merciful enough to help him. And even when he eventually got helped, religious men yet questioned him for accepting help on the Sabbath day.

O comrade, don't just be religious, be a Christian; be a carrier of the life of Christ. This life enables us to live the very life of Christ which is not controlled by some laws/routinized obligations that only increase the knowledge of sin but cannot help overcome it but by zoe; the love of God.

May we all contact and live this life that is higher than the law, that all around us may learn Christ through us.

Shalom
